It’s not a Van Gogh, gallery admits

] - 4. Agosto 2007 - 0:00An Australian gallery now has no idea who painted a work that it has long displayed as Head of a Man by Vincent Van Gogh. “We are not going to take it off the walls. It’s not an embarrassment – it’s just not by Van Gogh,” Gerard Vaughan, of the National Gallery of Victoria, said, announcing that it accepted the Amsterdam Van Gogh Museum’s findings. The authorship of the painting, hitherto worth £10.5 million, was challenged last year when the Sunday Times critic Frank Whitford saw it in Edinburgh. “It’s not a forgery,” Dr Vaughan said.
