[NYT - Europe] - 14. Aprile 2007 - 5:35

Lawmakers rejected a series of bills that would enshrine the country’s strict anti-abortion law in the Constitution, including one put forward by the far-right League of Polish Families to protect “life from the moment of conception,” in effect a total ban on abortion. Some of the proposed amendments won more than 60 percent of votes in the 460-seat Parliament, but fell short of the two-thirds majority required for constitutional changes. The League of Polish Families, a part of the governing coalition under President Lech Kaczynski, left, has just 29 seats, but managed to muster 165 votes for its proposal. The lawmakers also rejected separate proposals by Mr. Kaczynski to set the current law, which is already among the strictest in Europe and allows an abortion only in cases of rape, severe birth defects or danger to the woman’s life, in stone to prevent any liberalization by future administrations.
